Why Your Email Open Rates Are Low (And How to Fix Them)

Why Your Email Open Rates Are Low (And How to Fix Them)

Quick, honest question: do you know your email open rate? Not roughly. Actually know it?

Most businesses don’t and that’s the real problem, not the number itself. You can’t fix what you’re not looking at.

Why Open Rates Are Dropping For Everyone

It’s not that your emails got worse, it’s that everyone else started sending more of them. Inboxes that used to get 20 emails a day now get 100. Your customer isn’t choosing to ignore you specifically they’re triaging, fast and most things don’t survive the cut.

That means the subject line isn’t a formality anymore, it’s the whole game. If it doesn’t earn a click in about two seconds, nothing else in the email matters.

Where Campaigns Actually Fall Down

It’s rarely the offer, it’s usually one of these:

It’s judged in isolation, when it should be judged as one piece of a bigger, joined-up campaign across email, social, print and everything else.

The subject line sounds like everyone else’s: “Newsletter,” “Latest updates,” “Don’t miss out.” None of that earns a click.

The email looks like it was written for everyone, which means it lands like it was written for no one.

There’s no reason to open it today rather than next week or never.

What Actually Improves Open Rates

Better open rates come from better decisions made earlier, not clever tricks at send time:

  • A subject line that’s specific, not generic: say the actual thing, don’t tease it
  • Sending to the right list, not the biggest one
  • A joined-up approach, so the email isn’t the only place someone’s seen your message that week
  • Testing, properly, not guessing which version “feels” better

The Bigger Picture: Open Rates Are a Symptom, Not the Goal

Open rates matter, but they’re a symptom, not the whole story. The real question isn’t “did they open it?”, it’s “did the whole campaign, across every channel, make it easy for them to notice, trust and act?”

If you’re not sure whether your current email marketing is actually working, or just going out, that’s worth ten minutes of conversation. No hard sell, just a proper look at what your numbers are telling you, over a coffee (or beer!).
