How to inspire leading from the front and supporting others?

I have a fond memory I would like to share. Back when I was younger I had an MD who inspired me to lead from the front and always give support to others.

The role was relativley new to me and had not been there long. One day I noticed he was out sweeping the car park. I asked a colleague why he was doing this and he replied, “he’s doing it as we are all busy.’

It was surprised and a little shocked that the MD would be out doing this and yet still have a smile on his face. I gained respect for him and the memory has stayed with me over time. Over the years we built a relationship and he became my mentor also.

Due to his mentoring and advice, I would never ask anybody to do anything I was not willing to do myself. I am a big believer in mentoring and over the years I have helped where I can.
